History of the Ensemble
The legacy of Josef Vlach and his legendary Czech Chamber Orchestra inspired Jaroslav Šonský to continue the strong tradition of Czech string playing. Jaroslav knew Josef Vlach personally from his time living in Sweden and benefitted from the opportunity to cooperate with him and access his musical material. Jaroslav Šonský's Increasingly frequent contact with the Czech Republic led him to establish his own string ensemble in Prague in 2012. By naming the ensemble after one of the most important composers of the 20th century, Bohuslav Martinů, he confirmed his relationship with his rediscovered homeland and to the extraordinary musical mark that Martinů left on world music.
At the time of writing, January 2026, the ensemble has performed 65 concerts both at home and in Sweden, France, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, and they are also frequent visitors to Slovakia. They weathered the vicissitudes of the Covid pandemic with occasional concerts and successfully retained their Prague audience..
Many eminent soloists have appeared with Martinů Strings Prague: violinist Ivan Ženatý, cellist Tomáš Jamník, flautist Jaroslav Pelikán (also a renowned composer whose works the ensemble often premieres), violist Karel Untermüller, pianists Daniel Wiesner and Tomáš Víšek, soprano Marie Fajtová, mezzo-sopranos Karla Bytnarová and Olga Černá, baritone Roman Janál, harpist Hedvika Mousa Bacha and others from abroad including the leading Hungarian harpsichordist Borbála Dobozy, Italian clarinetist Claudio Mansutti, French pianist Sylvaine Wiart, Slovak baritone Marián Lukáč, German violinist Anna-Katarina Thoma, harpsichordist Gesine Tiefuhr, French cellist Francois Salque as well as a young Slovak talent - flautist Klára Valentovičová.
